King John’s Castle

We visited King John’s Castle in downtown Limerick for our first class field trip! We got a great tour of the castle and its history. Located strategically on the Shannon River, the castle was built by English King John to protect English Protestants immigrating to Ireland and house English soliders.

After King John, many renovations were made by other leaders. Most notably, the additions of extra height and slanted exterior walls to defend against the newly invented cannon.

My favorite part of the tour was when we got to climb to the top and look out over the entire city!
